St. Francis of Assisi
The Stigmata By
1224 St. Francis of Assisi had been aware for some time of his increasing
physical weakness (investigators today believe that he suffered from
some kind of cancer); he was also prone to severe bouts of depression.
He reacted by retiring into mystical prayer. That summer he went to La Verna,
Italy where he had an ecstatic vision of Christ on the cross and received
the Stigmata, the five wounds of the Crucified Christ.
