Oracle of Malta
Left. The 'Sleeping Lady' from the Hypogeum
In classical times it was the practice at some shrines for the
priestesses to deliver oracles and prophecy on the basis of dreams which they
had while sleeping in some forbidding and mysterious cave. This practice is
known as 'incubation'. This strange figurine, the 'Sleeping Lady,' represents
such a sleeping oracle from the ancient caves of Malta.
