Houdini the Skeptic
Houdini attended many seances,
and would always catch the medium performing some parlor trick, like the one pictured at left.
Houdini dramatically pulls back the curtain
from the seance cabinet to reveal the medium with a fake head
on a stick (meant to appear to be a spirit) and a trumpet in the
other hand.
In seances of the Twenties trumpets often floated
around the room and made sounds. Musical instruments seemed
to play while suspended in mid-air and the table would
float up and down.
