Houdini the Skeptic
Houdini became the arch-enemy of bogus mediums in the
seance room. He took devilish delight in exposing these mediums
with a great theatical flourish.
He took part in seances disguised in a variety of fake beards and eye
glasses (see picture at right) and, during some key moment in the hushed
stillness of the seance, Houdini would leap up and shine his flashlight on some
revealing piece of apparatus, then tear off his costume to reveal himself as the
great Houdini. In this manner, the newspapers would be full of accounts of the
previous night's debunking.
