 First Major UFO Sighting
Left, Kenneth Arnold standing
by his plane, holding a camera.
On June 24, 1947 Kenneth Arnold, a private
pilot, was flying over the Cascade Mountains searching for the
wreckage of a lost C-46 airplane for which a $5,000 reward had
been offered.
He never saw the C-46, but what he
did see put his name in newspapers all over the world. As he was
coming out of a turn over Mineral, Washington he saw nine disc-shaped
objects flying with a speed he estimated to be 1,700 miles per
hour.
