FLYING SAUCERS
Right Cover of the first issue
of Fate with story of Arnold's UFO sighting
The following day Arnold told his story to reporters from the
local newspapers. The story went to the Associated Press wire
service. Within days, as similar sightings appeared around the
country, a headline writer coined the phrase 'flying saucer'.
There were as many as 18 other sightings of unusual flying objects
in the Pacific Northwest that same June 24th. A prospector
had seen five or six "round, metallic-looking discs"
about 30 feet in diameter and 1000 feet above him. For the entire
one minute sighting, the old prospector's compass needle spun
wildly.
